Mindset Monday: Dabo Swinney quotes to live by

Clemson back in the NCAA Championship means a great opportunity to showcase one of my favorite coaches of all time. In my opinion, Dabo Swinney is one of the best coaches in the world. He instills belief in his team better than any coach in recent history, and a lot can be learned from his emphasis on relationships, belief, and hard work. Here are a few of my favorite Dabo quotes!

“To be an overachiever, you have to be an over-believer.”

Dabo has a huge laminated cutout he brings tall team events and games. The poster says, “Believe.” This is part of Clemson’s culture, and has lifted them over many teams that few believed they could beat. The highest levels of performance come from the deepest levels of belief!

“Do common things an uncommon way.”

Dabo and Urban Meyer always talk about “being uncommon.” This quote is simple but powerful. Being uncommon means doing the little things right, paying attention to detail, and doing the right thing- especially when it’s hard!

“Let the light that shines in you, be brighter than the light that shines on you.”

I’ve had this quote written above my desk for two years. This quote exemplifies the importance of humility, as well as never letting the outside noise get to you. Humble and hungry!

“Don’t worry about criticism from people you wouldn’t seek advice from.”

Dabo says it perfectly. Critics are an inherent part of life. How we respond to these critics is what matters. As athletes and coaches, it is important to always fall back on your mission, core values, and the positive influence you can have on others.

I’m excited to see two tremendous teams go to battle tonight. Belief will be a major key to either team’s success.
